What is Vegetarianism?

There are many different types of vegetarians and different variations within each subset. A lot of vegetarians don’t strictly fall under a particular category.  To better understand the varied degrees of vegetarianism, below is a list of four main groups of vegetarians.

Vegan or Strict Vegetarian:  Excludes all animal products such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese and other dairy product.

Lactovegetarian : Excludes meat, poultry, fish and eggs but includes dairy products.

Lacto-ovovegetarian:  A vegetarian diet that excludes meat, poultry and fish but includes eggs and dairy products.  According to the ADA, most vegetarians in the United States fall into this category.

Flexitarian: A semi-vegetarian diet with a focus on vegetarian food with occasional meat consumption.  A vegetarian that occasionally eats chicken or fish.
